Shooting line manners and safety

I have just attended a really nice shoot down in Arundown, thanks to the organisers for a great day.

However, just a small moan about some archers on the shooting line that seem to have no idea about how to shoot or have any manners.

I had one such person next to me who at least twice failed to load his arrow properly onto his rest which result in the arrow buzzing across about three targets, once whilst I was at full draw ready to execute the shot. Lucky I held it together and got on with it. OK, the arrow wasn't close to the shooting line, but not putting arrows on rest properly is asking for trouble.

Secondly, the same archer gets a bouncer, and instead of stepping back from the shooting line and alerting the judge with a quiet word, he proceeds to hollow out that he had a bouncer from the line. The judge in fairness just looked at him and shook his head.

Rant over

Yep

Iv had some crackers on the line I was at an indoor shoot and on detail with a left handed archer who kept in perfect time with me when I went up so did she every time I tried for the clicker she just managed to get there first which caused alsorts of confusion and I even dropped a few times and she followed me up down up down It was like shooting with a mirror. I felt sorry for her so sad to be like that. I see her at shoots now and Iv actually prayed she isnt on with me. Some shooters dont have a clue I think there should be some sort of brain cell count before letting them on the line. I know you have to start some where But she clearly wasnt a beginner. You know who you are

I agree, beginners have to start somewhere and would excuse them, but in this case, this was no beginner, just somebody who did not have a clue.

Someone get this man a cold shower, or bromine tablets.

Seriously, left handed archers, or I should really say the experience of shooting next to a left handed archer, is very unnerving. Especially if it's a bit tight on the line, they favour deep breathing and they have just had an Indian takeaway.

Since they have to shoot with righties most of the time, lefties must have nerves (and in this case stomachs) of steel.

I always used to shoot with a lefty.
We just arranged ourselves so that he was on the left & we shot back to back.
Some tournament organisers actually take this into account & ask you to let them know on entry forms.
I do have a lasting memory of an indoor double Fita a few years back, where I shot facing a very tall lefty. I spent the whole day just inches from his armpits & whenever I faced him I stared him straight in the moobs!

Oops, my mistake. I only wanted to calm him down, not damage him. Ethylene Bromide is/ was the stuff in petrol. Potassium bromide is the well known early sedative and alleged tea additive. Bromine itself sits next to chlorine in nastiness.

1. Why didn't I think of that... probably because I'm thick.

2. I have the number of a very good therapist who might help with that memory. Now before Andy gets in quick, I will go on and say you should be grateful it wasn't a tall lady, else your concentration would have been all over the place... or perhaps just not on your own form.

Hmmm, I've got a bottle of brown pills here somewhere....

I've always thought being sinister was a bit of an advantage, in that I look the Archer on my left directly in the face (well, about 6 inches above it, anyway) everytime I compete. The dextrous don't have to do that anywhere near as much - I'm used to it. I do concentrate on good line ettiquette as a result though. If I finish first, I will always wait until their next arrow hits the target before moving a muscle. I have yet to compete with a fellow southpaw on my right, so I tend not to afford that individual the same consideration every single time. Me turning round and looming would just make things worse.

as a sinister individual who shoots dextrously (i guess my eyes are just less sinister than my hands) i would seem to have the best (or worst) of both worlds

And the problem with this was? What you've described isn't a demonstration of a lack of etiquette, more perhaps an example of how she was able to wind you up so easily or how you need to focus on your own shooting.

When I'm up on the line I focus on what I'm doing, not everyone round about. I try as much as possible to tune out all the background noise and get on with the job in hand. I try not to let other archers antics get to me and certainly don't let them distract me.
