Hats Off

I committed an Archery Faux Pas today, when receiving my award from the Lady Paramount I left my hat on.

The Judge took it upon himself to stand up and say.. "as chairman of the county I would like to remind Archers that when receiving their awards from the Lady Paramount please take off your hats, you know who you are"

Was I wrong to leave my hat on and does it really matter, and was the Judge correct in doing what he did or would a quiet word have been better? Bearing in mind that it was a sweltering day, I was sweaty and my hair was manky, I felt comfortable leaving it on and received my medal (in a plastic wallet, no neck ribbon) in a polite and cheerful manner (unlike several juniors with a grunt).

A couple of others hats remained on also and it was commented on afterwards that that sort of comment by the Judge is exactly the kind of stuffy image Archery needs to get rid of.

Lively discussion to follow please

This is absolutely classic bad manners...
Not you... the chairman!
The one thing worse than bad manners is drawing public attention to it.
He should have had a very gentle quiet word.
(BTW check your flies first too )

Chavvy tracksuit bottoms - no fly issues

Andy Roddick didnt take his hat off at Wimbledon just a minute ago... and he got his trophy from a Royal, I feel like he's my brother in arms, or hats....

Yep, Roddick's hair was pretty grotty and his hat is part of his kit. Not to mention they immediately award the players, so it's not like they have time to sort themselves out.

I agree that making an example of someone is bad taste. It could have been done in a much nicer, more professional way.

And well done on winning the Lady P prize!!

It wasn't the Lady P prize, it was a shiny 1st Place Medal Federer had time to put on a snappy cardigan though and look his usual dapper self.

Union, true heart and courtesy, you should have taken off your hat and so should have Roddick! He'd have been hung drawn and quartered in the middle ages.

federer doesn't wear a hat, so his head was neither sweaty nor messy.

and well done on the shiny 1st place medal! (apologies for getting that wrong)

As opposed to, say, having a "Lady Paramount" in the first place?

In all seriousness though...

There are times when public comment can be very effective in taking care of repeated problems in the context of a competition... and there are some people who deserve it.

But in this case, using it strikes me as rather like killing a mosquito on one's forehead with a hatchet...

At least you realised you'd commited a faux pas! I remember years ago a friend of mine who lived in his baseball cap never mind shot in it quite forgetting he had it on his head and got sharply taken to task after a prize giving for not doffing it when getting his trophy.

It would seem to me there must be quite a history of men forgetting to do this especially when tired and hungry and wanting to go home.

Got to keep the sponsors logo in camera shot at all times wherever possible !.... a bit like going up to the podium carrying your bow.... it's £s or $s in the bank to some sponsored athletes

For many archers removing a hat is not such a big problem as they have no hair to worry about. I can sympathise as I get shocking hat hair. I have since made an addition to my kit bag and carry a comb!

Just think in 20 years time you wont have an hair and removing your hat will not be an issue.

Did exactly the same thing 3 weeks ago, it was my very first ever medal (only been shooting a few months) and my second tournament.
In my excitment i forgot i had a hat on and secondly I was completely unaware of this piece of protocol. Nobody said anything, but a club member pointed out to me that I should have removed it. so now I am aware. You never find these things out until somone tells you about it, after all they dont form part of the beginners course do they.

dont see what the fuss is really.

in F1 and other motorsport hey leave caps on and actually have a winners cap, so are encouraged to wear it.

agree with the stuffy image comment - sometimes people seem to act like an @ss for the sake of it
