Ground Pins/Marking

Hi all,

I'm trying to design a stance marker that's removable from the line, but that leaves a normal ground marker behind.

The thing is, I'm not sure about what the rules are for things like this, I mean, what's the maximum size of marker you can leave behind in the ground outdoors, for example? And would I even be allowed to have a stance width marker on the line?

Please and thanks, oh knowledgable peeps!

not sure I follow - if you use target pins or similar then one for each foot should be all you need - you can use whatever you like to get the initial position right. I've tried a couple of different things instead of pins - the covers used to blank off electrical sockets are quite good.

Well, while I could put two pins down, how would I know that they were the same distance from each other each time I put them in the ground at successive shoots?

Thats what I meant when I said use whatever you like to position them initially - it doesn't have to be left on the line once your pins are in. Depending on how critical you think your position is it could be rigid to give you the angle (if you are not a square stance type of guy), or flexible and just give you the width of your stance. I sometimes wonder at the value of footmarkers - though I still usually use them - when there may be a slight discrepancy in the field layout that undoes the accuracy on the line.

The ground is rarely flat and even, you will most likely want to pick a position which is comfortable. You should know your stance roughly anyway, simply stand on the line as you'd normally do, check out your alignment to the target. Once happy, put markers down and the job is done. (best to do this when you're setting up your scope as obviously it will be a factor in deciding your foot position)

Agreed - its an 'on the day' thing for me. You can't necessarily transfer a rigid position from one ground to another.

Alternatively try chaining your ankles together Guantanamo Bay style. The first time you could adjust the chain length to suit and then "Hey Presto", you foot spacing will always be the same.........forever

Not sure how GNAS will view the Orange boiler suit tho - club colours anyone????

I was actually thinking along these lines, but made of shoelace with a quick release between the ankles so you can get off the line without making a fool of yourself

Serious question, do target archers really measure and mark the position for each foot on the shooting line.

Well yes, a lot of people use foot markers. Usually just little disks pinned to the ground (target pins are popular). I've seen various sizes. Some strung together to give a fixed distance each time of use. One guy I met even hombrewed his out of pound coins glued to nails... only he kept on losing them...

I've not seen any evidence that the use of footmarkers has any beneficial effect on accuracy. So I'd probably class them with the "Samick power ring" - works if you believe in it....

More to the point - how can you stop forgetting to collect them at the end? My daiughter must have got through dozens of my blue golf tees!

Sounds like me. I use targetpins through discs of pink glittery stuff, but I haven't yet found a foolproof way of remembering to take them up

I know someone who uses an old rubber car-mat, cut to the outline of the feet (still joined at the heels) when at their correct stance. Simply work out the line-up to the target and mark it on the template. Nothing in the rules against it.

It's ideal for a repetetive stance during training. It works for her.
