Limb safety question

Over the last couple of months I have seem two Guardians with damage to the top limb, one was caused by a dry fire and the other was cause when the archer failed to nock an arrow properly. In both cases the inside of the left hand limb has been hit by the lug on the draw length module and has resulted in a number of splinters each being about 1.5-2.0cm in length and about 0.5mm thick across the whole thicknes of the limb.

Now this isnt a question of how good/bad you think Bowtech limbs are, its more about safety. If the damage was fixed by the retailer would you be prepared to shoot the bow at 60lbs and would you consider it safe?

I can't see why not! If you took the bow to a reputable Bowtech dealer and he replaced the limbs and cams, if they were damaged, with new, shoot it, it's got a new guarantee. I think your question should have been put to a dealer, not a forum!

Both bows were out of guarantee and the limbs were not replaced as it wasnt manufacturer fault, instead they were fixed, not quite sure how but I think it was with some type of resin(?). The cams were not replaced either as they were said to be ok.

Just to clarify the damage is on the across the narrowest part of the limb not the width.

Who was it that fixed the limbs? Not sure I'd be too happy. If any sort of structural damage was done to a limb I'd make sure it was replaced, any sort of repair done to it would be a weak point waiting to fail.

I agree Dave, With 300ft/lb stored at rest I'd buy new limbs!

This was my thinking as well. I couldnt see how a limb with this type of damage could be repaired and still have confidence with it.

The limbs were fixed by the retailer, dont know if this was under instruction from the archer, their adivce or Bowtechs.

You are kidding surely?!?! Who the hell would decide to fix a compound limb rather than replace it?? It's not a warranty replacement because of the dry fire's but they should still be replaced for safety's sake.

Because of the nature of the bow, the limbs on Bowtech Guardians can be replaced individually, they do not need to be replaced as a set. The long and the short of it is, if you can get both blokes together, get them to go half's on a new set (about £190/set). Replace the damaged ones (cos chances are if the top limb went, the bottom one's not gonna look pretty either).......and for god's sake, get them to have the bows checked over by somebody who knows Bowtech's.

Anyone daft enough to shoot a bow thats been "Fixed" must want their heads examining. Its like playing Russian Roulette its just a matter of time till something goes drastically wrong.
I know I wouldn't touch one with bargepole. As said in previous replies get some new limbs for goodness sake.

Both archers have been 'strongly' advised not to shoot them and to get limbs replaced. The one isnt going to, I know he is just going to carry on shooting it in its fixed state. You wont find me anywhere near him on the shooting line. The other archer probably will get them replaced, especially after seeing this on here.

Like most of the comments on here, I really dont undertand why they take risks like this, its just stupid and an accident waiting to happen.

Thanks for all the comments, it confirms exactly what I thought.

Right, a bit of common sense finally prevails, I've just called the one who is more open to replacing the limbs and asked him to look at this thread. To put it mildly he is shocked. Ok he is a novice, only shooting a couple of months (hence the poorly nocked arrow) but he says he didnt realise limbs could be so dangerous, the retailer offered to replace them but also said they could repair them at a fraction of the price. Being a novice, he took their word that the repair would be ok. I'm picking the bow up from him next week and am going to take it to a different retailer, get them to inspect it and replace what needs to be replaced.

FIXING BROKEN LIMBS WITH GLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That should NEVER be offered as an option.
Whatever dealer advocated this course of action should be named and shamed.
When a bow is dryfired the cams should be checked for fine cracks and the string and cables changed.
They have been put under Extreme stress that they are not constructed to take.
Now I have heard it all!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would only use them if the repair was guaranteed as safe and permanent by the repairer.
Was it?

Dont know if the repair was offered with any sort of guarantee, but I would have been surprised if it was.

I did consider naming and shaming the retailer but I wont as I have only heard the story through the archer, I wasnt there when the bow was originally taken in and have no 1st hand knowledge of what was said. The owner of the bow does visit here and if he wants to name & shame then its up to him.
