oak for shafts?

hi all, im sorta new to archery. my slazenger bow broke about a year ago and i have now ordered a Samick shb. i have tried making my own and im just about making shootable ones, i intend to stick at it.

i have some english (its French actually) oak planks about 10-12mm thick by about 50mm wide and 2m long. the grain is going the wrong way to make a bow is this wood any good arrow shafts?

i have also been looking at the veritas dowel maker, what is a good place to buy it? i've seen them in rutlands but what is a good price to pay?

thanks

Hi James,

The anular rings (I believe that is what you mean wheb you refer to grain) must run the whole length (or nearly so) of the shaft, so if from the side the anular rings are not seen as parallel straight lines running from one end of the board to the other the wood will not make good arrows. In fact any arrows made could be dangerous.

Hi James,

As you are using or at least propose to use oak, have a look at the grain as well, you should be able to see it. Again this should run the length of the shaft if possible. If all is good then you should have no problems with making shafts from to board.

I have never used Oak, or at least not real oak have used a wood that goes by the name of Tasmanian Oak, or Victorian Ash, anyway have read differing opinions of oak as arrow shafting, some have said it is good and tough others have said its too brittle.

Anyway Best of luck.

Craig.

I made a some oak arrows a few years ago, inspite of all coming from the same piece of plank with good rings, grain etc. and I spined them carefully but they would not group at all well, I was quite dissapointed and gave up with them.
Good luck
